Of course, you can also add meats and or use vegan cheese for a vegan stromboli. For this recipe, I used store-bought pizza dough. We love making this mushroom and spinach stromboli for dinner, but it’s also a great picnic food. We often take it with us when we’re spending a day at the beach or the park as it’s easy to transport and easy to eat. It’s delicious directly out of the oven, but it’s also delicious cold, so it’s the perfect food for taking on road trips or for snacking.

What is a Stromboli?

A stromboli, sometimes also called a pizza roll, is a close cousin to the Italian calzone and pizza. Usually made with pizza dough, it’s filled with the usual pizza toppings, including Italian cheeses like mozzarella and provolone. In addition, you can easily add Italian meats or, in this case, your favorite vegetables. The pizza dough is rolled up with all the filling ingredients inside and then baked until golden brown and crispy.

Stromboli is easy to eat with your hands and perfect as an appetizer. It’s an easy dinner recipe as versatile as pizza because you can change up the ingredients for the filling to fit your taste or what you have available at home.

What is the Difference Between Calzone and Stromboli?

The main difference between calzone and stromboli is that the calzone is made with pizza dough folded over the filling ingredients like a hand pie or empanada. At the same time, you seal the stromboli by rolling it in a spiral motion.

The calzone and the stromboli also have different origins. The calzone is a traditional Italian food originating in Naples as a casual on-the-street way of eating pizza. On the other hand, the stromboli was invented in Philadelphia in the Italian-American neighborhood of South Philly and named after the Isle of Stromboli in Italy.

How to Make the Best Stromboli

The key to making a fantastic stromboli orpizza roll is starting with a great pizza crust. There are a few different pizza crust options at the grocery store. If you’re going for store-bought pizza crust, make sure you buy the best quality pizza crust you can get your hands on; it makes a huge difference. Then, for even better results, call your favorite local pizzeria to find out if they will sell you pizza dough!

When it comes to the ingredients for the filling, you can get as creative as you want to. Some of my favorite suggestions include:

Meats

  • Salami
  • Pepperoni
  • Ham
  • Bacon
  • Sausage

Cheeses

  • Mozzarella
  • Provolone
  • Cheddar
  • Havarti

Veggies

  • Onions
  • Green peppers
  • Spinach
  • Mushrooms
  • Banana peppers
  • Black olives

I like to serve the stromboli with marinara sauce on the side for dipping, but you can also add it inside the stromboli. If you add the marinara to your stromboli, make sure you are not adding too much. You don’t want your pizza dough to become soggy.

Easy Vegetarian Stromboli Recipe (5)

If you are using veggies that might give off a lot of liquids when cooking, like tomatoes or mushrooms, it’s best to cook them before adding them to your stromboli. You don’t want your pizza dough to get too mushy and lose its delicious flaky texture.

FAQs

What are the ingredients for stromboli? ›

Stromboli is a pizzeria menu staple where I grew up in Philly and I usually make it with Genoa salami, deli pepperoni, provolone, and mozzarella cheese. I love brushing the dough with melted butter, garlic, and fresh parsley for added flavor.

Why does my stromboli split? ›

What's the difference between a calzone and a stromboli? ›

The major difference between a calzone and a stromboli is how they are folded and sealed before they are baked. Stromboli and burritos are rolled.

Calzones use ricotta cheese, and stromboli does not. Stromboli is made with mozzarella cheese (preferably low-moisture) to keep moisture at a minimum.

What's a Panzerotto? ›

A panzerotto (Italian: [pantseˈrɔtto]; pl. : panzerotti, Italian: [pantseˈrɔtti]), also known as panzarotto ( Italian: [pantsaˈrɔtto]), is a savory turnover, that originated in central and southern Italian cuisine, which resembles a small calzone, both in shape and dough used for its preparation.

What's the difference between a calzone and a stromboli Reddit? ›

To the best of my knowledge, Stromboli is rolled up to create layers on the interior in an almost spiraled fashion, whereas Calzones are large pockets, much like an empanada, without layering on the inside.

What is another name for stromboli? ›

A stromboli is similar to a calzone or scaccia, and the dishes are sometimes confused. Unlike calzones, which are always stuffed and folded into a crescent shape, a stromboli is typically rolled or folded into a cylinder, and may sometimes contain a thin layer of tomato sauce on the inside.

Is pizza dough the same as calzone dough? ›

Both are prepared with flour, water, salt, and yeast; that's the solution. In contrast, the eggs and olive oil used in most calzone dough give it a deeper flavor and a softer texture. Eggs and oil are not common ingredients in pizza dough, contributing to its crispiness and durability.
