Copenhagen City Hall Square
Over the past few years, Copenhagen City Hall Square has undergone some construction work, leaving wedding celebrants and tourists without the chance to capture beautifulportraits against the majestic backdrop of Copenhagen City Hall. However, I'm thrilled to share that the work was completed last summer (2023), just in time for couples to enjoy open-air ceremonies here.
So, what can you see in Copenhagen City Hall Square?
The Fountain of the Dragon, a stunning sculpture depicting a bull and dragon in battle, alongside the historic City Hall building, which was designed by Thorwald Bindesböll and Joachim Skovgaard and opened in 1904.
"Weather Girl," a gilded sculptural group atop the Richs Building. This unique piece tells the weather—when the sun shines, one sculpture depicts a girl with a bike, and when it rains, another sculpture shows her with an umbrella walking a dog.
Lur Blowers, a bronze image of two Lur blowers standing tall atop a column in front of Scandic Hotel.
A statue of the beloved Hans Christian Andersen, facing Tivoli Gardens.
And let's not forget the practical side — City Hall Square is home to Rådhuspladsen metro station, various shops, and supermarkets. It is one of the most vibrant streets in Copenhagen, thus, a hub for events and demonstrations.

Planning Copenhagen City Hall + Copenhagen City Hall Square Wedding
Getting married in Copenhagen City Hall was the first choice for Sandra & Tim, a German-Spanish couple, now living in Germany. Opting for a less traditional and more intimate affair, they chose to invite only their closest family members and guests to join them. After discussing their preferences, we settled on a comfortable 1-hour package, allowing us to capture both the ceremony and group and couple portraits before and after the ceremony.
…
On the day of their wedding, I eagerly awaited Sandra and Tim's arrival at Copenhagen City Hall square. They had chosen to embrace the tradition of a first look, with Tim eagerly anticipating Sandra's arrival inside the Copenhagen City Hall ceremony room. And when she finally emerged, adorned in a stunning yet understated satin nude playsuit, complemented by green shoes and a delicate flower crown, Sandra looked simply breathtaking. The elegance of her attire was further enhanced by a beautiful dried flower bouquet.
The ceremony commenced with the couple's chosen music playing as Tim laid eyes on Sandra for the first time that day. It was a truly touching moment! Following the brief ceremony, the festivities continued in Copenhagen City Hall square, where guests participated in a cherished German tradition - the "cut-out heart race." In this age-old custom, friends of the couple hold up a bed sheet with half a heart drawn on it, and the newlyweds must race to cut out the shape before walking through it together. Some friends even provide small scissors to make the task more challenging, symbolizing the couple's readiness to overcome life's obstacles as a team.
Following the tradition, Sandra and Tim shared a toast before heading to the Copenhagen City Hall gardens for formal group photos and intimate couple portraits. Surprisingly, the space was empty (which is quite unusual for a Saturday wedding!) allowing us to take full advantage of the serene atmosphere.
